Background to ISO45001
The International Standards Organisation is developing a new management system standard for OHS, which will replace the current AS4801:2001 standard. It will closely align with ISO9001:2015 and ISO14001:2015 for quality and environmental management and like these standards, there will be an emphasis on ensuring the management of OHS is aligned with the broader organisation strategy and the context of the organisation.
Current Status of ISO45001
The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) of ISO 45001, the new International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, was issued for ballot on 30 November 2017. The publication of the final standard is likely to be in the first half of 2018.
The AS4801 standard and the OHSAS 18001 standard will be superseded on publication of ISO 45001 and organisations currently certified to AS4801 and OHSAS 18001 will have a three year period to migrate to ISO 45001.
What you should do
Nothing – until the final version of the ISO45001 standard issued. Then a gap assessment should be completed to identify actions required to fully comply with the new standard.
